Here are some myths that have been perpetuated about Las Vegas.

Some say that during the construction of the Hoover Dam that workers were buried during the pouring of the concrete. Actually, the concrete was poured in small amounts that would have allowed anyone that slipped into the concrete to be pulled out safely. (It is true that 96 workers did die during the dam's construction, however.)

The kidney rumor - this is a rumor that has circulated in several cities, including Vegas. The story is about a man that has drinks with a stranger, blacks out, then wakes up in a hotel bathtub and is covered in ice. There's a note and a phone beside the tub, the note stating "call 911 or you will die".
The "victim" was rushed to the hospital where doctors find that one of his kidneys was removed. In order to show that this story is false, the National Kidney Foundation has asked anyone that has had his kidneys illegally removed to notify the foundation, but so far no one has ever come forth.

The "Megabucks Curse" came about after Cynthia Jay-Brennan hit a $34.0 million jackpot at the Desert Inn, then became a quadriplegic after a car wreck. The rumor is that all winners of Megabucks die tragic deaths soon after claiming the prize. The truth is that many others have won the Megabucks jackpot prize and still live to tell about it.

Prostitution is legal in Vegas. Vegas does not allow prostitution, but a part of neighboring Nye County, 45 minutes from Vegas, does allow prostitution.

96 people died? How?

With prostitution beng illegal, there are sure a lot of prostitutes soliciting openly in Vegas.

I have heard before about the kidney one and the dam one but never the Megabucks curse. There are always alot of myths that seem to revolve around big cities.

The first few times I was in Vegas, you couldn't walk 5 feet on the strip without someone trying to peddle "cards" for the 'working girls'. But during my last trip out there in November, the number of people out there passing cards out had diminished quite a bit! I would say there was about a 95% drop....so the police must really be cracking down.

re: Hoover Dam - Here's a couple good links:

and the most informative one, listing exact cause of death:

Wow, what a dangerous job! Now the heat fatalities could have been prevented, and all those people falling and/or drowning... So many people giving their life for that dam!
