Here are some myths that have been perpetuated about Las Vegas.
Some say that during the construction of the Hoover Dam that workers were buried during the pouring of the concrete. Actually, the concrete was poured in small amounts that would have allowed anyone that slipped into the concrete to be pulled out safely. (It is true that 96 workers did die during the dam's construction, however.)
The kidney rumor - this is a rumor that has circulated in several cities, including Vegas. The story is about a man that has drinks with a stranger, blacks out, then wakes up in a hotel bathtub and is covered in ice. There's a note and a phone beside the tub, the note stating "call 911 or you will die".
The "victim" was rushed to the hospital where doctors find that one of his kidneys was removed. In order to show that this story is false, the National Kidney Foundation has asked anyone that has had his kidneys illegally removed to notify the foundation, but so far no one has ever come forth.
The "Megabucks Curse" came about after Cynthia Jay-Brennan hit a $34.0 million jackpot at the Desert Inn, then became a quadriplegic after a car wreck. The rumor is that all winners of Megabucks die tragic deaths soon after claiming the prize. The truth is that many others have won the Megabucks jackpot prize and still live to tell about it.
Prostitution is legal in Vegas. Vegas does not allow prostitution, but a part of neighboring Nye County, 45 minutes from Vegas, does allow prostitution.
