The Egyptians gambled. In the Great Pyramid of Cheops at Giza, archeologists found dice.

In the British Museum there is a Mural depicting two people playing "atep" which is a game in which one person bets on the number of fingers the other is holding up behind his back.

There was also evidence of Checkers and a game called "hav-em-hau" in which participants tossed disks into a copper bowl.

In Asia, the Chinese gambled. Confucius refered to a game called "wei-ch'i" in which they played with hundreds of pieces that were used to simulate war strategies, something on the order of chess.

In India, people gambled on dice and chariot racing around 1500B.C. The not only bet money, but their estates, slaves and some even bet their wives.

The romans were gamblers too. It was looked down on and laws were made to make it illegal. And if some one won and the other person wouldnt pay up, well, that was a chance they had to take.

In America, gambling has been around for centuries, and when Lief Ericson visited America, he found the Indians playing games of chance.

New Orleans was actually the first major gambling center. In 1718 taverns and coffee houses had rooms that were especially designated for gambling. Then gambling became outlawed in 1811, but later in 1823, it was legalized and $5,000 was charged for a gambling license.
