Construction on The Smith Center for Performing Arts should begin early next year and is slated to be completed by the year 2011. This is a venture that is close to the heart of Chuck Atwood, who recently retired from Harrah's Entertainment as Vice Chairman. Atwood will be helping to get the Smith Center off the ground.

The Smith Center is being built primarily for the residents of Las Vegas, who will be able to enjoy the Las Vegas Philharmonic, the Nevada Ballet Theatre, and also Broadway Tours along with other arts groups, in a 2,050 seat theater.

There are plans for a cabaret space to be used for jazz, and also space for community productions, children's productions, and educational outreach facilities.

The Smith Center is so named for the former executive of the Las Vegas Review Journal and chairman of the Donald W. Reynold's Foundation, Fred W. Smith and his wife, Mary B. Smith. The foundation provided $150 million for the construction of the Center.
