I love to play blackjack but it is another game that I don't really know all that well. I play for fun online most of the time. The others I am just playing with my kids.
I am afraid to try to play for real at a casino as I think that I would just end up embarassing myself. Does anyone know the answer to the question above I would really like to know why they are the best bet.

I think you mean split aces and eights?
What you need to remember that in the long run, it's always going to be profitable to double and/or split
whenever logically possible. Each time that you don't do this when basic strategy calls for it, you're increasing the casino's advantage tremendously....under certain circumstances, the house edge will triple, if you don't split or double your hands!
The moral of the story is that even though you may lose that particular hand, you're just giving money away over time by not splitting or doubling your hands..
The Wizard has some great basic strategy cards that you can look over and study -
