I don't think you caught it right on the players at the blackjack table...
More players means fewer blackjack hands played from the deck or decks.
With more blackjack players you can watch the other players to see what card/s they have and figure out how to play your hand by what cards they have.
The cards they have will determine whether or not you should take a card or stay (with the hand you've got).
If you get to play at a friendly blackjack table, usually the noisiest blackjack table because players are winning hands, you can ask players at the table what they think you should do since you're new at the game.
Most times they will give you hints or flat tell you whether to take another card or stay with your hand.
I know most casinos don't like players helping other players in blackjack because this drops the house edge on winning money.
But most casinos don't mind if other players help you in blackjack, if it's your first time or you're new to the game, and they'll let other players help you out until you've learned how to play.
This comes from experience. I was once a greenhorn blackjack player myself and needed help quite often at the blackjack tables.
