Default Earth Quake in Las Vegas Area

People were pretty stunned when a 3.0 magnitude earthquake occured just north of the Las Vegas Valley at 7:10 am this Friday morning. No injuries were reported according to the story I read in the Las Vegas Sun.

A professor from UNLV said that this quake was minor and that Vegas is capable of seeing quakes with a 7.0 magnitude. She also said that Las Vegas could be damaged from a quake as far away as 150 miles.

They have done simulations with quakes in Vegas and a large one would do a lot of damage. The worst damage would occur to the very tall buildings all around the city.

The Las Vegas valley is somewhat like a bowl. Any quake that is in the surrounding area will make whatever is inside the bowl quiver. The bigger the quake, the worse the damage is, even if the quake is far away.

I am sure people were shocked and scared to feel the earth shaking under their feet. I would have been terrified.
