Default Man in Major Trouble Over Bad Checks

It must stink to be this guy right about now!

Christian peterson of Wisconsin had to appear in court on Monday. He is being charged with writing bad checks at Caesars Palace and at the Hard Rock. It's a total of $3.75 million dollars!

He is being charged with two counts of writing and passing checks with insufficient funds with intent to defraud and one count of theft.

Quote:
“All of it is in dispute,” Chris Rasmussen, Peterson’s attorney, said before Monday’s hearing in front of Clark County District Court Hearing Master Kevin Williams. “He never ran up that kind of debt and how he got that much credit is shocking.”

He has plead not guilty. His trial is set to begin on June 1st. He is facing 18 years in prison.

What really gets me is how in the world this happened? How did they not catch him before he wrote that much? The security at that casino must stink to high heaven. With checks I though they checked them before they cashed them.

I know at most stores not that even take checks they run it through and willlet them know if there are funds there to cover it, even my grocery store does.

when you "bounce" a check to a casino it is not beforehand. he drew against a credit line then when they went to take the money from his account it was not there. very common in las vegas and a win-win for the casino. he gambled with their money, lost, now they get to come after his money. even if the casino cant recover anything they are out of pocket nothing.

Most people can't get credit right now and he did this, what? How in the world did he run up such a bill/I know that those places Ceasars Palace and the other place are very expensive but dag.I guess if it possibly ever happend to me I would plead not guilty too,I would play dumb as all get out.

He is going to have to pay that money back unless he can prove that he didn't know about it,and really how do you spend that kind of money and not know it?Seriously hows that happen??

Well I heard a bit more about this and I get he has actually filed a lawsuit against Harrah's back in June of 2008. His attorney says that he never ran up such a bill and he said that how he could have gotten that much credit is shocking.

He has made testimony in front of the Grand Jury saying that Harrah's actually provided him with a private jet to get to and from Las Vegas in April of 2008. He claims that they provided him with the transportation even knowing that he had a gambling problem.

Here is more...

Quote:
His suit also claims that about 45 minutes into his flight home on April 22, 2008, a flight attendant informed Peterson the jet would be returning to Las Vegas for an emergency landing due to mechanical difficulties.

Peterson feared for his life, the suit says.

Upon arrival in Las Vegas, Peterson was greeted by a Harrah’s representative who told him he had to sign a casino marker before he could leave on the company jet.

A Harrah's rep told the Grand Jury that Peterson was told he was free to leave at any time on a commercial flight but that if he wished to use the jet he was required to sign a marker. Peterson signed the marker and used the jet to get home.

It is amazing how it got up to so much money with no one checking. You would think that after a it started running up that someone at the casino would check to see if he had money to back the marker.

Will be interesting how this unfolds. What do you do? Put him in jail? How does that get the money back and solve anything?

Make payments? Wonder how long it would take to pay back $3.5+ mil?

He just better be glad it is not the old days!

Thanks for clearing that up for me 1819. Now I can understand how it happened. It still amazes me on how he got away with it so easy. Essp that much. I hope he gets what he deserves, he knew he did not have the money before he did it.

Ya, I pretty much don't see the casinos getting their money back. Thats an aweful lot of dough to try and come up with.

I hate to put any blame on the casinos in instances like this because it seems that they are always to be blamed for what individuals do. But, I think someone at the casinos really dropped the ball on this one. They shouldv'e been alerted at some point and put a stop to it.

I agree with y'all, and what 1819 mentioned that the casinos are not out of money.

I'm beginning to think the casinos welcome this sort of play once in a while; what a nice way to advertise!

How else would you get your business spread all over in the media?
By fires, large sums of money being stolen, or some other catastrophe.

This does sound a bit fishy to me; that a person was able to spend that amount of money, in "checks" no less!
