Default MGM Grand Pool Checmical Leak Hospitalized 26

I just read that 100 people had to be treated for breathing problems after too much chlorine leaked into the lazy river at the MGM Grand pool area. Twenty-six of them had to be taken to local hospitals.

I guess there were about 1,500 people in the pool area when they had to evacuate.

They believe that a pump malfunctioned allowing too much chlorine in. The gas from the chlorine started to evaporate, filling the air, causing breathing problems.

Quote:
“What it does is cause respiratory distress,” he said. “It’s hard for you to breathe … The only way to get it out is by breathing it out.”

“They use sodium hypochlorite (to chlorinate water in the pools),” he said. “That’s bleach. That’s what they inject into the lazy river.”

No one will suffer long-term health effects from the brief exposure, Brenner said.
MGM reacted quickly and no one will suffer any long term effects. Thank goodness for that at least.

I am glad that no one is going to suffer long term effects from this. Something like that is horribly serious and I am surprised that the MGM Grand does not inspect these thing more closely and more often to prevent this kind of thing from happening.

I know that places like this are extremely busy but lets face it, when things like this happen there are thousands of people who can be effected by it and that is not good publicity for the business and of course then the possibility of lawsuits in the near future.

Bad publicity and lawsuits are something that is never any good at all to a casino or any other business for that matter.

Though again I am happy that no one was seriously injured when this incident happened. Something like that could have been deadly especially for those who have respiratory problems.

I know how bad chlorine fumes can be for breathing since I've worked on a pool before and had to add it every day. Well, almost every day.

During the summer time in northern California I would add an average of about 1 gallon of chlorine per day in a 10,000+ gallon pool because the sun would burn it off (so to speak).
On top of worrying about chlorine levels, they have to keep the alkaline and acid levels in check too.
If either the alkaline and acid levels are off, that would throw off the amount of chlorine that needs to be added to a pool.

A leak like the one they had at the MGM pool must have been a faulty valve, allowing a constant flow of chlorine in.

I hope not too many people were hurt by the chlorine vapors. And I'm glad that MGM closed it down as soon as possible to fix the leak.
