NBA Star Arrested for Gambling Debt
A former NBA star, Antoine Walker had an arrest warrant issued against him on this past Wednesday for about $1 million dollars in gambling debt. He allegedly wrote checks to cover markers at three different casinos in Las Vegas. The checks bounced. The police were called.
Instead of turning himself in and trying to make things right, he was picked up by the police in Harrah's casino gambling on Thursday. One would think that if you were in trouble for not paying markers, you would stay away from the casinos!
During his career in the NBA, Walker made about $100 million dollars. Thats plenty to pay his own debt. The question is, does he still have money? I am sure they are now finding out.
Walker is being held on $87,000 bond. According to the prosecutor on the case, Walker has repaid $178,000 to the casinos so far.

If Antoine Walker does have money to spare, then this may be something he's doing to get attention.
I'm hoping this is not the case and he pays back all of his markers.

I really hope he makes it right with the casino. I am sure he will. The thing is you are right. If I owed money to a casino, the last place I would want to be seen in, is a casino.
I just hope he doesn't have a gambling problem. If he does, I sure hope he can get the help he needs.

It looks to me like it is at most anyplace now, when you write a check they can tell if it is good right then. If this is so how come they took so long to catch him? It does not make sense to me.

Re: NBA Star Arrested for Gambling Debt
It would make a little more since to a guy, I think...
Here's an NBA star who's come to Vegas thinking he'd get away from it all, gamble a little, and thinking he'd get a break by betting big.
But, it didn't work out that way.
I think 1819 could stipulate the reasoning behind this, but it may place him under criminating circumstances.
This may also be a good sign to us all; drinking and gambling don't mix, unless you keep it moderated.

because it was not a "check" it was a marker. when you are cleared for a marker you are given a set credit limit. obviously this guy had upwards of a million dollar line. when you go to the casino you sign for the money. the paper you sign is viewed as a check. you then have a set amount of time to pay it back. the higher the limit the longer the period of time. if you dont pay it back they go into your bank account and take it out. your account details are provided when your line is approved. if you have taken the money out already then you "bounced" their marker/check and must pay them back. example. i go into a casino and ask for a 10k line. they pull my info and see my bank history and see i can cover the 10k. i go to the casino and sign for the money. they give it to me and i blow it. i then go to the bank and take out the 10k and blow that. in 6 weeks when it comes time to pay i have 0. big problem lol.

dont know him or his situation. i doubt he's broke. the press loves to throw out these high dollar cases to the public but the fact is he is just one of thousands who do not pay their markers.

Re: NBA Star Arrested for Gambling Debt
Thanks for the imput 1819.
I had thought that maybe he was drinking too much or something and just lost track of his spending and didn't care or just forgot about his markers.
That also makes me wonder, how you put it, if he was good for the credit and signed for the markers and then bought a car while he was there.
I know I forget things at times. This may one of those times where he'd fogotten how high his marker was and then spent his bank money on something else.
Perhaps a lady friend coaxed him into buying something. Boose and women usually don't mix too well either.

probably has a separate account for the casinos. many times your accountant/financial advisor puts you on an allowance. people may be surprised to know that a hundred million in the bank is not as liquid as one may think. if he had say a million bucks for vacations and gambling and toys, etc., and blew it, that account may not be replenished for a year. i have nowhere near that kind of money but i do have some accounts where monthly dividend checks automaticly pay expenses. i never see the transaction. one time a bond was recalled and the monthly dividends from that bond paid some monthly expenses. i didnt even know the bond was recalled until i got some nasty phone calls from creditors asking where their money was.

Re: NBA Star Arrested for Gambling Debt
This hit the news because of who he is, like 1819 said there can be plenty more in the news if they wanted.
Charles Barkley had his go around with gambling a little while back.
As much as I hear casinos are careful not to divulge who gambles with them, I am not surprised "high rollers" can bounce from casino to casino while owing markers.
