Default Neon Museum

Ever wonder what happens to the neon signs when business's decide to change them out in Las Vegas? Honestly, I never wondered about that but I found out.

They go to the boneyard. It's on North Las vegas Blvd. surrounded by a chain linked fence. Thousands of old signs haphazardly leaned against each other, rusting away.

This graveyard is about to have a resurrection. The signs there that are piled up like junk are about to become a part of a new Neon Museum that will open later this year.

Some signs have already been restored and are now shining proudly once again in Las Vegas.

But this is a graveyard bent on a resurrection. The signs brought here are part of a new Neon Museum to open this year. Daily tours next to a neon-themed city park across the street often sell out.

"This is one of the few places where Las Vegas will celebrate its past instead of imploding it with fireworks," said Justin Favela, the director of docents who led my tour on a winter Thursday.
I think it's really cool that they are going to fix these old lights up and display them. They have a lot of history.

This is good news. I have to be honest that I never gave much thought to where the old neon sign ended up. It is a shame to hear that they were rusting away as they were. I think a neon museum is going to be a great addition to Las Vegas.

Not to mention keeping them from rusting away to nothing is going to be helpful to the planet as well.

So this idea is good all around!! I hope that this museum manages to save more and more signs as the years pass by and that people stop in often to enjoy the history of them all.

Thank you Danny and welcome to the Las Vegas forum.

I think making the Las Vegas Neon Museum was a great idea.

I like looking at old signs on the side of the road when I'm traveling. They bring back memories.

Perhaps visiting the Neon Museum will bring back memories of when I first visited Las Vegas with my dad, back in the late 60's.

First off, hello there Danny and welcome to the forum and thanks for the link and additional information.

Now as to the museum, I think thats a great idea as those neon signs were so much a part of the glam and glitz of Vegas in bygone years. And some of them were works of art in themselves.

I especially liked the cowboy neon sign. I dont remember which casino it was shown at but it was really cool looking and you know a lot of work went into those signs as they werent at first just processed as things are today but were all hand made.

Kudos to those that are making the neon sign museum. Keep part of old Vegas alive and well.
