Default Moulin Rouge Being Demolished

The Moulin Rouge in Las Vegas was the city's first fully integrated hotel in Las Vegas. Now it is being demolished.

The demolition was under appeal for the three remaining structures but it was denied.

Quote:
"This is a sad moment in the city's history," Mayor Oscar Goodman said before the unanimous vote.

"...There's no question that the Moulin Rouge symbolically has stood as a beacon as to the city's position as far as our history on segregation and desegregation," Goodman said. "And that's a lesson that should never be forgotten."
The Moulin Rouge has a ton of history behind it. It was the very first racially integrated casino-hotel in the United States.

In 2003 the building was mostly destroyed by fire. Only the historic sign, tower and façade remain. But not for long.

This is horrible news to hear. I wish that someone would have put the time and money into it to keep it going rather than just demolish it. This is a true piece of this countries history and it really should be preserved.

Here is some great reading about he history of the Moulin Rouge. I thought that you all would enjoy reading about it like I did.

Moulin Rouge

I really hate to see this countries history being erased. I know that this knowledge will always be in writing but it is also nice being able to "see" it as well.

Besides being the first racially integrated casino-hotel, the Moulin Rouge is so much more and it is a shame that soon it will no longer be.

Thanks for the link... awesome information.

It is a real shame that they aren't able to preserve whats left of the building. It seems like little by little everything that represents the past is disappearing. I love my history and I think it's aweful when old buildings with so many important things being linked to it have to be destroyed.

That is so true it seems like buildings that hold historic values and memories are all being erased to make space for that seems to me parking garages anymore.

Now there are homes in this country which don't hold as much historic value as the Moulin Rouge yet, these places are protected by law. Now why in the hell can someone do that for this building???

It really makes no sense to me at all. We should be protecting the past of this country as much as possible. It seems like everyone wants to look to the future which is a good thing however with out the past that we and this country as had already there would not be a future to look forward to.

I hate to say this, but, "another one bites the dust."

I think the only reason they can't save it is because the Las Vegas economy calls for expansion to bring in more customers and residents to the area.
And, as we all know, money speaks louder than words.

A place like this would probably go up for auction and to the highest bidder, since it doesn't bring in enough money for upkeep and they don't have the resources to hold on to it.

It's a sad thing, but life must go on in the big city.

You are so right about that. Las Vegas is bursting at the seams it seems so expand they must. It just stinks that it has to come at the expense of something that holds so much past within it. Not just history but remarkable history. Well thats just the way it goes I guess and since I can't afford the place, it is what it is.

I know that Las Vegas needs room to expand due to the ever growing population in the area, but to do it at the expense of a building that holds such a great history is just bullshit in my opinion.

Its sad when the times come that money speaks louder than anything else and that seems to be happening a whole hell of a lot in this country now days.

Granted this building would most likely require a whole lot of work, but it could be restored to to the point where it can be reopened for business which would give people a chance to truely enjoy a real piece of history!!!

I know what I say simply doesn't matter at all, but still it is how I feel and I wanted to voice my opinion.

I would rather see a piece of history be saved then some new shiny building being built or a parking lot. Then again that is just how I feel about it all.

To quote another cliche = "You can't stop progress"

It is a shame though that it has to come at the expense of a historic building or at least a building full of history.
