Getting Around

There are several ways to get around in Vegas. The strip is about 4 miles long so if you want to take your time and see everything up close, you can walk it.

Here is some advice on walking the strip. Wear comfortable shoes. Make some stops along the way to rest. Make sure you have water with you. The casinos are kept at around 60 degrees so if you are walking, grab a sweater with you. Don't jaywalk, big fine. Cross where it is designated spots or walkways.

You can also use the monorail. With the monorail, you will get a nice elevated view of the strip and no traffic. They have nine trains that travel between MGM Grand to the Sahara. They are open 7am to 2am Monday through Thursday and 7am to 3am Friday through Sunday. The cost for the monorail are $5 for 1 ride, $9 for 2, or $35 for 10. If you have a little one, they ride for free if they are under 5. Tickets are good for one year.

You can rent a car. But be warned, traffic on the strip is no picnic. Or really you can have a picnic while waiting in your car. LOL!!! There is alot of competition on the rent a car scene, so it really isn't that bad on your pockets.

Take a cab. There are alot of cabs to grab but be careful, the base fare is $2.20 a mile. There is also an initial charge of $3.30 when the meter starts to run. Also, keep in mind if the meter senses the cab is slower it will charge you .20 per every 32 seconds. So if you are at a stop, or driving really slow, the meter keeps on charging you. Cabs only accept cash also. Cabs can only carry 5 people at a time by law. Don't let them take you the I-215 tunnel from the airport, it will cost you more money. You have to also be in front of a casino to be picked up.

Try taking the CAT. This is a double decker bus that makes several stops along the strip. It will hold up to 97 people. Can you say, be cool? Well guess what? It is air-conditioned. Yippee. You can get a all day pass for just $7.00. Not too shabby. Make sure you have the correct amount. They don't give change.

You can take the trolley. The prices for the trolley are $2.50 for 1 way, $12.00 for 3 days, and $20.00 for a 4 day pass. The trolleys will also make several stops along the strip.

The shuttle service is running as well. It will take you to a sister casino for free. Check with your hotel on shuttles.

I have seen "don't let them take you through the tunnel" a few times. How will you know they're taking you through the tunnel and what if it's too late and they're already there?!

I don't want to be a ripped-off tourist!!!

Well I know I have heard that saying before too. But I always thought it had to do with New York.

I haven't been yet but like you I would like to know why they say that. If anyone knows that answer please share.

I always worry no matter where I visit that the cabbies aren't taking the shortest routes.

If I want to get there quickly I will ask them what is the fastest way but otherwise I just let them drive.

First of all, take the shuttle from the airport to your hotel. They will take you there on the shortest route and when I was there in April of last year, it only cost you $6.

If you must take a cab from the airport to your hotel, tell them what hotel you want to go to and to not take the tunnel to get there. Why? because by taking the tunnel, they are taking you the long way around. So you have to tell them up front not to go that way.

The cabbies are out to make money, but dont let them do it at your expense.

I am thinking just walking or taking the bus is the best and cheapest ways to get around the city. Walking may be a bit of a problem if it is mid summer because the temp is just unhuman at that time. I would be a puddle of sweat by the time I reached my destination lol.

My wife and I normally get hooked up with one of the small shuttle buses outside of the Las Vegas Airport's main entrance area.

Just let them know which hotel you are going to and they will hook it up for you, for a fee of course, but it doesn't cost much for round trip fare.

The usual time from the airport to our hotel is about an hour and sometimes a bit faster than that.
Depending on which hotel you're booked in, the ride will take from 30 minutes to 45 minutes.

The bus ride is air-conditioned and somewhat comfortable.

there is a ton of road constuction at the moment as well as construction next to bellagio. plan on extra money for cabs. telling the driver to not tunnel you is usually good advice but sometimes with traffic and construction it is faster...

Lol, nothing will ever stop construction in Vegas it seems...

I usually get a cab and tell them to take the freeway...

so true. whatever they are building next to bellagio is insane. someone told me some sort of convention center and a casino. so much for recession...
